New England Courant draws the wrath of the General Court .

June 11, 1722

The newspaper prints an article that satirizes the legislature for not taking action against pirates operating off the New England Coast. The court subsequently jails publisher James Franklin for committing a “gross affront” to the government. It censures him again in January 1723, then prohibits him from printing or publishing any newspaper or pamphlet without government approval.
